Spravato® is the first FDA-approved nasal spray medication for adults with TRD and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Unlike traditional daily oral pills that can take weeks to work, Spravato® is designed to target different brain receptors, often providing relief much faster.

  • You have tried at least two antidepressant treatments
  • You are looking for rapid relief from depressive symptoms
  • You prefer an in-office, monitored treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Spravato® the same as Ketamine?

Spravato® is esketamine, which is derived from ketamine. However, Spravato® is specifically an FDA-approved nasal spray formulation for Treatment-Resistant Depression and MDD, whereas IV ketamine is often used off-label for depression.

Does insurance cover Spravato® treatment?

Yes, Spravato® is covered by Medicare and most major commercial health insurance plans for patients who meet the criteria for Treatment-Resistant Depression. Our team will handle the prior authorization process for you.

Can I drive home after my Spravato® session?

No. Because Spravato® can cause sedation and dissociation, you will need to arrange for a trusted friend, family member, or medical transport to drive you home after your 2-hour observation period. You should not drive or operate heavy machinery until the next day following a restful sleep.

Do I still take my oral antidepressant?

Yes, Spravato® is designed to be taken in conjunction with a daily oral antidepressant. Our psychiatric providers will coordinate your complete medication management plan.

How long does each Spravato® treatment session take?

Each Spravato® session includes administration time (about 5 to 10 minutes for the nasal spray) plus a 2-hour observation period in our clinic. Your total time at our office will be approximately 2 to 2.5 hours per visit.

What are the common side effects of Spravato®?

The most common side effects include dissociation, dizziness, nausea, sedation, headache, and increased blood pressure. These effects are typically temporary and subside during the observation period. Our medical team monitors you closely throughout each session.
